PRP Treatment for Acne Scars

PRP for Acne Scars

Our PRP clinic has been successfully treating acne scars utilizing the power of microneedling with PRP. We have improved our methods and therapy over the last decade and are confident you will enjoy your smoother and healthier looking skin.

Everyone who has ever had acne will likely have some scars to show for it. Acne scars come in various shapes and sizes, but all share one common goal: to make your skin look worse than it did before you had acne. While they can be frustrating, acne scars are also highly treatable.

We will discuss what causes acne scars and how you can treat them with PRP, a better and more cost-effective solution than stem cell therapies. We’ll also cover some prevention tips to help keep your skin looking its best. So, if you’re struggling with scarring from your acne, read on! We’ll help you get your confidence back.

What are the Causes of Acne Scars?

Acne occurs because of inflamed blemishes caused by excess oil, bacteria, dust, and dead skin cells in your pores. In most cases, the skin pores start swelling, which causes the follicle to break.

Infected material can create deeper lesions if the follicle causes a deep break in your skin. Although your skin attempts to repair itself, the repairs are rarely smooth and flawless. As with any other injury, poorly healed follicle lesions can result in scar tissue.

What Do Acne Scars Look Like

What Do Acne Scars Look Like?

Acne scars are of two main types: atrophic acne scars and hypertrophic scars. Atrophic scars are also called depressed scars because they appear as indentations in the skin. Conversely, hypertrophic acne scars appear as raised scar tissue lesions. The most common types of acne scars are:

Ice Pick

Narrow, deep, distinct scars narrow as they get deeper – as if poked in with an ice pick.

Rolling

Wide, shallow, undulating scars. Commonly present on your lower cheeks and jaws, these scars make your skin look uneven.

Boxcar

Typically oval-shaped, shallow dimples, these scars have sharp edges and appear on your jaw and cheeks.

Raised Scars

Otherwise referred to as hypertrophic scars, these raised acne scars most commonly appear on your chest and back.

Treatment Options for Acne Scars

Acne scars are stubborn, and no single treatment is best for everyone. Besides for PRP for acne scars, the following are some other treatment options that might improve the appearance of your skin, depending on your scar type, your skin type, and the severity of the scarring.

Home skincare

Using sunscreen can help limit the contrast between unscarred and scarred skin. Some medicated creams, such as those containing azelaic acid or hydroxy acids, might help too.

Soft tissue fillers

Injecting collagen, fat, or other substances under the skin can plump up the skin over indented scars. The goal is to make the scars less noticeable. Results are temporary, so repeat treatments are needed to retain the effect. This method has little risk of changes in skin color and is also used for filling in fine lines.

Laser resurfacing

Laser treatment is becoming increasingly popular for treating acne scars and is often used on spots once treated with dermabrasion. This technique has an increased risk of side effects for people with darker skin or a history of keloids.

Skin needling

Your doctor rolls a needle-studded device over the skin to stimulate new collagen and elastin formation in the underlying tissue. It’s a safe, simple, and possibly effective technique for acne scarring. It has minimal risk of discoloring the skin. Results are subtle, and you may need repeat treatments. Microneedling can also help treat stretch marks.

Surgery

Using a minor procedure called punch excision, your doctor cuts out individual acne scars and repairs the wound with stitches or a skin graft. With a technique called subcision, your doctor inserts needles under the skin to loosen fibers below a scar.

How Can PRP Microneedling Treatment Fix Acne Scars?

Platelet-rich plasma or PRP with microneedling is a promising treatment for acne scarring that’s growing in popularity in dermatology.

PRP acne treatments improve the appearance of your skin by smoothing the surface and decreasing scars left from acne. Whether it is due to genetics, hormonal changes, or a poor diet, everyone experiences acne at least once in their life. PRP Treatment Beverly Hills has a great solution for acne scars and blemishes.

PRP therapy for acne works by utilizing a patient’s cells to repair skin. Also called a “vampire facial” because of its use of blood, PRP injections are applied directly to the scar tissue.

This acne solution has become popular because patients can capitalize on their physical resources. Doing so makes it possible to avoid using harsh chemicals that may ultimately harm skin more than reduce acne. Each of a patient’s platelets can signal to the body where to increase healing and repair. Plus, because the materials come from your own body, there is no risk of allergic reaction.

Thanks to the tiny needles used in the micro-needling process, this natural skin rejuvenation process is virtually painless. Although patients who undergo this acne solution are comfortable, sometimes swelling and bruising occur. Our physicians may apply cold compresses to the face to prevent this discomfort. Our physicians and nursing staff will numb up your face before the procedure for better comfort.

What is platelet-rich plasma injection treatment like for removing acne scars?

A medical professional will withdraw blood from the patient. Next, they’ll put the blood in a test tube in a centrifuge. The device spins the blood to separate the plasma and platelets from the white and red blood cells.

To create PRP, a high concentration of platelets (the things that make your blood clot) are added to the plasma. This creates a serum full of growth factors (special proteins in platelets) and cytokines.

The created serum is then injected into the acne scars to expedite healing. This treatment also works well with other modalities, such as micro-needling.

What age patient is PRP treatment appropriate for?

PRP treatment is ideal for teenagers and adults suffering from acne scars. The natural, non-surgical solution helps heal acne scars, wound healing, sun damage (such as hyperpigmentation), and rejuvenating the face.

In addition, since the treatment uses your own blood, it’s non-allergenic, natural, and has fewer side effects and less downtime than other treatment options.

Microneedling with PRP effectivness

Research has shown that microneedling to be an effective treatment modality for acne scars. When coupled with platelet rich plasma therapy, it is even more effective with higher patient satisfaction scores.

A meta-analysis review study analyzed the combined effect of microneedling and platelet rich plasma for the treatment of acne. It included 472 patients and compared microneedling as a sole therapy vs microneedling combined with PRP therapy. The conclusion of the study was that combined treatment with microneedling and PRP is more effective than microneedling without PRP for patients with acne scars. Patients treated for acne scars with microneedling and PRP had a significant reduction in acne scars and a high satisfaction rate.[1]

Another study included fifty patients 17-32 years of age with atrophic acne scars. Microneedling was performed on both halves of the face. Skin injections as well as topical application of PRP was applied on right half of the face, while the left half of the face received injections with  distilled water. Three PRP with microneedling treatment sessions were given one month apart. The right and left halves both showed improvements since microneedling was performed but the half with PRP therapy showed a greater improvement vs the half that was not treated with PRP. This study reveals that microneedling is an effective treatment for acne scars but when coupled with PRP, it is even more effective. [2]

A study that included 35 patients with a mean age of 25 revealed that there was a significant improvement in the degree of scar severity with both microneedling by itself as well as microneedling combined with PRP. Patients who received platelet rich plasma therapy with microneedling had better results and improvement in their acne scars. [3]

A systemic review article published in dermatologic surgery in 2020 reviewed 33 articles in regards to the treatment of acne scars with microneedling. It showed that all 33 articles examined showed improvement of acne scar appearance after microneedling treatments. [4]

What To Expect When You Are Treated for Acne with PRP

The procedure typically lasts thirty minutes to an hour. It is recommended that patients drink plenty of water and consume a healthy meal before the session.

Once the blood is extracted, trained physicians prepare the viable cells for injection. We create the optimal PRP acne solution with a patient’s medical history and concerns in mind. This treatment plan varies based on each patient’s needs and skin condition; however, improvement is typically seen after the first few sessions.

At PRP Treatment Beverly Hills, we’re very proud of our stellar results and patient satisfaction.

What are the Potential Side Effects of Using PRP to Treat Acne Scars?

PRP can cause swelling, redness, and mild bruising. In rare cases, you may suffer from an infection.

Is PRP for acne scars safe?

PRP treatment for acne scars is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It has also been the subject of dermatologist clinical and systematic review by the medical community.

A recent review of existing studies of the whole and split-face treatments showed that acne scar treatment was more effective when combined with PRP.
