Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

PRP injections are becoming a popular therapy option for patients with various medical conditions. Whether it’s athletes trying to speed up their healing process or people seeking skin rejuvenation, PRP therapy is now in demand all over the world.

What does PRP stand for?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. This refers to a plasma solution with a concentrated plasma component. Platelet-rich plasma injections are a new treatment method that stimulates natural healing without the need for surgery or medications.

What is plasma?

Plasma is the liquid component of our blood. The non-liquid or cellular component includes various blood cells like red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets contain beneficial proteins like insulin-like growth factor (IGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). All these factors perform important functions in forming a stable blood clot, stimulating cell growth and regeneration, and accelerating the healing process.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

When creating platelet-rich plasma, a doctor takes the patient’s blood sample and runs it through a centrifuge. This device spins the sample at high speed to separate the different blood components. As a result, the fluid separates into three layers: the red blood cells settle at the bottom, platelets occupy the middle layer, and plasma rises to the top.

PRP is extracted from the middle layer, resulting in a plasma solution with a concentrated level of platelets. Normal platelet count in blood ranges between 150,000 and 350,000 platelets per milliliter. The concentration of platelets in PRP injections exceeds 1,000,000 per milliliter, which enhances their healing properties.

What are the benefits of PRP injections?

PRP is an all-natural treatment. It entails the patient’s blood, so no external drugs or chemicals are involved in the process, making it very safe. Patients receive an injection of their blood cells, so there’s no risk of allergic reactions.

PRP injections are also less invasive than surgery. Within the first few days, patients may experience some discomfort around the injection site, but it’s usually mild, and it fades away.

Another advantage of PRP therapy is that it can treat a wide variety of symptoms. In addition to pain relief, PRP reduces inflammation and stiffness while targeting damaged tissues.

What are the side effects of PRP Injection?

PRP is derived from your own blood and is autologous; thus, there should be no allergic reactions due to the injection. There may be some slight discomfort at the injection site and redness or bleeding, but the procedure is usually tolerated well without any issues.

How to prepare for a PRP injection?

There is not much preparation that is needed prior to platelet-rich plasma injections. It is advised that you do not be on Asprin or NSAIDs such as Advil or be on blood thinners prior to your procedure.

The first stage of PRP injection therapy is drawing a blood sample from the patient. Therefore, patients should be well-hydrated before their appointment. They should also have a meal beforehand to avoid feeling dizzy during the blood sampling procedure. Mild soreness at the injection site is a common side effect, but it usually diminishes within a few hours.

Several PRP injections are administered for optimal effect. The number of injections depends on the type of injury and affected area. Typically, patients receive one to three PRP injections. The gap between one injection and another is usually one month.

After your PRP therapy procedure, it is often recommended not to wash the area and let the PRP stay on for at least 24 hours. This is to ensure that the growth factors and proteins have a chance to heal the area they were injected or applied to.

How long do PRP injections last?

Since PRP relies on the body’s natural healing mechanisms, it might take a few weeks for patients to feel the treatment’s complete effect. Over time, the injected plasma activates cells and tissues to heal and regenerate. The average success rate of PRP therapy is 80 percent. Usually, patients can notice the treatment effect after six to nine weeks. The therapeutic effect of PRP injections lasts for 6-9 months.

PRP Injections for Hair Loss

PRP injections can be helpful in promoting hair growth and skin healing. Patients who suffer from male pattern baldness are eligible to try PRP injections which can slow down hair loss. Doctors inject PRP directly into the scalp to improve blood supply to the growing hair follicles. As a result, PRP increases hair count and enhances follicle thickness.

Further, patients who undergo hair transplants can take PRP injections to improve hair growth after the operation. Postoperative PRP injections can improve hair regeneration and activate dormant hair follicles to grow new hair.

A review study published in Journal of Drug Des Devel Ther in 2022 revealed that PRP can be used as a new and effective therapeutic option for hair loss. It concluded that it was effective in treating androgenetic alopecia and female pattern hair loss, either by itself or with medications such as minoxidil and finasteride. It also found that PRP is considered a safe and effective way to treat alopecia areata and other hair loss disorders. The study also revealed that there was enough evidence showing that PRP can improve clinical symptoms in some types of cicatricial alopecia.

PRP Injections for Orthopedic Injuries

PRP Injections for Orthopedic Injuries

Some sports injuries like tennis elbow, Achilles tendon inflammation, jumper’s knee, rotator cuff pain, or hamstring muscle cramps respond very well to PRP injections. Unlike surgery, PRP injections are less invasive, making them less likely to put the patient at risk of bleeding, infection, or other postoperative complications. PRP treatment can also help athletes recover from sprains, strains, and other muscle injuries 50 percent faster than traditional options like physical therapy and medication.

PRP Under Eyes

PRP under eye injections and PRP under eye treatment has gained popularity in recent years as it has shown to be an effective treatment of dark circles, and improvement of hollowness. This procedure is usually performed at the same time with microneedling and helps in the production of collagen and elastin. The stimulation of collagen and elastin by our bodies help fill the hollowness, tighten the skin, and decrease the dark appearance. Puffiness and discoloration are less after the treatment with improvement of bags.

PRP Therapy for Osteoarthritis

Other orthopedic conditions that can be improved through the use of PRP injections include osteoarthritis. Once injected, PRP changes the environment around the inflamed joint, decreasing inflammation, pain, and stiffness.

An observational study published in Agri revealed that PRP injections provided a meaningful improvement in chronic knee pain in patients with knee OA throughout a 12-week period. The pain reduction response to PRP was higher in patients with early-stage knee OA.

A review article published in Therapeutic Advances in  Chronic Disease in 2019 revealed that there was enough available evidence supporting the use of PRP therapy to treat Osteoarthritis. The results from randomized clinical trials seemed to favor PRP use over other intra articular treatments such as hyaluronic acid injections, to improve pain in the short and medium term (6–12 months).

PRP Injections for Postsurgical Recovery

Patients recovering from surgery can still benefit from PRP. PRP treatment can accelerate postsurgical recovery. Many people choose PRP injections to speed up their recovery after muscle and tendon surgery so they can resume daily activities without pain. Studies support using PRP injections to promote healing after tendon and ligament surgeries such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) operations.

PRP Injections for Skin Rejuvenation

PRP is also used in the form of vampire treatments for skin treatments. Platelets contain alpha granules which play a role in wound healing and enhance skin elasticity and texture. Doctors can inject PRP into the skin to remove wrinkles and deep creases. The treatment can reduce acne scars as well. Vampire facials can result in an even-toned skin complexion with a more youthful look.
