PRP Injections for Hair Loss - PRP Therapy Beverly Hills

Can platelet-rich plasma (PRP) help with hair loss?

PRP hair treatment is one option for selected patients with pattern hair loss or thinning hair. At our Beverly Hills clinic, Dr. David Nazarian, MD evaluates the cause and pattern of hair loss before recommending PRP hair restoration or other treatment options. Patients commonly ask whether PRP is appropriate for male or female pattern hair loss, how many sessions are typically considered, when changes may become noticeable, and what treatment costs. These questions are reviewed during consultation so the treatment plan is based on diagnosis rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol. Hair loss can affect both men and women and may have genetic, hormonal, medical, nutritional, medication-related, or other causes. Hair loss can affect many aspects of a person’s life, including self-confidence and social interaction, causing psychological distress. Male pattern baldness affects more than 80% of men and nearly 50% of women experience female pattern baldness.

For decades, there have been many “solutions” that claim to prevent or reverse thinning hair, but the actual “results” have proven otherwise. For example, there were claims that shampoos and conditioners thickened hair with no significant results. Therefore, the search for more effective hair restoration treatments continued.

In 2006, researchers started considering platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment and PRP injection for hair loss as a potential treatment for the promotion of hair growth. While the scientific research has been slow, a growing number of randomized trials and meta-analyses now show encouraging results, particularly for androgenetic (pattern) hair loss.

Neil Sadick, MD, board-certified in dermatology in New York City, and the Director of the Sadick Research Group (for understanding and treating hair loss) said the use of PRP “is a great hair loss treatment option because it has several scientifically based articles showing its efficacy increasing hair count, hair thickness, and the growth phase of the hair cycle.”

Dr. Nazarian has been performing PRP hair restoration treatments since 2008. Our practice offers both platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) approaches for hair restoration when clinically appropriate, with treatment recommendations based on the type and extent of hair loss.

PRP Before and After

What is platelet-rich plasma treatment for hair loss?

Human blood has four main components: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. PRP preparations consist of plasma (including growth factors and proteins) and platelets.

PRP, prepared with FDA-cleared devices, has been used for many years to treat musculoskeletal and skin conditions (via injection and microneedling procedures) and promote wound healing. Platelets play an important role in healing throughout the body and are about five times more concentrated in PRP preparations than in whole blood.

For some types of hair loss, researchers theorized that when platelets are injected deep into the scalp, reaching the bottom of the hair follicle, it may stimulate dermal papilla cells – which play a critical role in hair growth.

A review article published in Drug Design Development & Therapy in 2022 reported significant increases in hair density and hair thickness in patients treated with PRP compared with placebo. [5]

Is PRP hair treatment effective in promoting new hair growth?

PRP has been studied most extensively for androgenetic (pattern) hair loss. Systematic reviews and randomized trials suggest it may improve hair density in some patients, but study quality is variable, protocols are heterogeneous, and results are not guaranteed. PRP cannot restore hair where follicles are no longer viable, and treatment should follow a medical evaluation for the cause of hair loss.

Recent reviews have found potential benefit for hair density while also noting low-certainty evidence, publication bias, and the need for better standardized trials.

Is PRP therapy effective in promoting new hair growth?

PRP may improve hair density in selected patients with androgenetic alopecia, but response varies and not every study shows the same magnitude of benefit. Hair-count and hair-diameter outcomes differ across trials, and preparation methods are not standardized.

For that reason, PRP should be discussed as one treatment option within a broader hair-loss plan rather than as a guaranteed way to regrow hair.

What’s the procedure for platelet-rich plasma injection for hair loss?

What’s the procedure for platelet-rich plasma treatment

PRP hair restoration is an in-office injection procedure. Blood is drawn, processed to prepare platelet-rich plasma, and the scalp is injected after comfort measures such as topical or local anesthetic when appropriate. Temporary soreness, swelling, redness, bruising, bleeding, headache, or tenderness can occur, and activity recommendations vary by protocol.

The number and spacing of sessions should be individualized rather than treated as a universal schedule.

What are stem cells? Can stem cells be used with PRP?

Stem cells are cells that can develop into other cell types. Some researchers are studying cells derived from fat tissue (adipose-derived cells) for hair loss, because fat is an accessible source of these cells. These treatments are still experimental and are not FDA-approved for hair loss.

Other add-ons are sometimes combined with PRP, such as growth factors. Evidence for most add-ons is limited.

The best-studied use of PRP is for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss), which is driven by hormones and genetics.

FAQ

What are PRP hair treatment side effects?

Because PRP is prepared from the patient’s own blood, immune reactions to the platelet product itself are uncommon. However, injections are not risk-free. Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, bleeding, headache, infection, nerve or vascular injury, and reactions to anesthetics or antiseptics can occur.

Candidacy should be reviewed carefully in patients with bleeding disorders, platelet abnormalities, active infection, significant anemia, or medications that affect bleeding or platelet function.

How long does PRP for hair loss last?

How long do PRP hair results last

PRP is not a cure for hair loss, and durability varies. Some patients who respond may undergo maintenance treatment, but there is no single evidence-based maintenance interval that fits everyone. Dr. Nazarian can also evaluate whether genetic, hormonal, nutritional, medication-related, or other medical factors are contributing to hair loss and discuss established treatments such as minoxidil or finasteride when appropriate.

How many PRP hair treatments are needed?

Many published protocols use a short initial series of treatments followed by reassessment, but schedules vary substantially across studies and clinics. The number and interval of sessions should be individualized based on diagnosis, response, tolerability, and the treatment plan.

What’s the cost of PRP hair treatment?

PRP hair restoration is $800 per session, $2,100 for a package of 3 sessions, or $3,300 for a package of 5 sessions. The $450 consultation is credited toward your first treatment. Treatment volume and blood-draw protocol are determined by the preparation system and clinical plan rather than by assuming that more tubes or more volume produces a better result. See our full PRP and PRF price list.

Should I consider PRP hair restoration after hair transplantation?

PRP can be used as a supporting treatment after a hair transplant. Some studies suggest it may improve graft survival and speed regrowth, although the evidence is limited. It is usually performed at the time of the transplant or within a few weeks.

Am I a good candidate for PRP hair treatment?

PRP is most often considered for patients with androgenetic (pattern) hair loss who still have miniaturized but viable follicles. Evidence is less established for many other causes of hair loss, and completely bald areas are less likely to respond.

Whether PRP is appropriate depends on the diagnosis, extent of loss, medical history, medications, baseline laboratory findings when indicated, and patient goals. A physician should also review proven alternatives and combination options.
