Vaginal PRP for Menopause: Dryness, Sexual Function and Evidence

Written and medically reviewed by David Nazarian, MD — Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Director of PRP Treatment Beverly Hills. Last medically reviewed: October 2026.

Quick answer: Vaginal PRP has been explored for menopausal sexual symptoms, including dryness and discomfort, but it is not an established treatment for genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Standard treatments for GSM have a stronger evidence base and should be considered first or alongside investigational options.

Why menopause affects vaginal and sexual health

Lower estrogen levels can contribute to vaginal dryness, reduced lubrication, tissue changes, urinary symptoms, discomfort with intercourse, and changes in sexual function. These symptoms fall within the broader diagnosis of genitourinary syndrome of menopause.

What has vaginal PRP been studied for?

Small studies have reported improvement in vaginal-health or sexual-function scores after PRP, but study quality is limited, protocols differ, and many studies do not compare PRP against the best-established standard therapies.

What established treatments should be discussed?

Depending on the patient, options may include vaginal moisturizers and lubricants, low-dose vaginal estrogen, vaginal prasterone, ospemifene, pelvic-floor therapy, treatment of vulvar or pain disorders, and systemic menopausal hormone therapy when appropriate for broader symptoms.

Where PRP may fit

PRP can be discussed as an investigational adjunct for a carefully counseled patient who understands the uncertainty. It should not be presented as a replacement for diagnosis or standard menopause care.

Important: Vaginal PRP and platelet-rich plasma for female sexual dysfunction remain investigational/off-label. Evidence is limited and heterogeneous, and these treatments should not be presented as proven cures or replacements for established evaluation and treatment.
